![]() It was 40 years ago when a group of concerned DeKalb County citizens and volunteers gathered and decided it was time to begin the difficult task of raising money to build a local hospital. Finally in 1964, the DeKalb Memorial Hospital opened its doors as "The Miracle of Indiana." Built and equipped through the sole contributions of the citizens of DeKalb County. Today, DeKalb Memorial Hospital still prides itself on bringing "Better Health for Those Close to Us." DeKalb Memorial Hospital Volunteer Opportunities DeKalb Memorial Hospital volunteers contribute more than time and resources-they bring a level of enthusiasm and a spirit of warmth to their work that simply can't be expressed in dollars and cents. Hospital Auxiliary The Hospital Auxiliary is a separate not-for-profit adult volunteer organization with over 70 members. The Auxiliary furnishes volunteer staff and donates financial contributions to the hospital. Funds are raised through the hospital gift shop proceeds, the Curiosity Shop thrift store, and other fundraising activities. Volunteer staff provides assistance throughout the hospital through a variety of positions such as hosting, reception, hospitality and gift shop clerking. Volunteers of DeKalb Memorial Hospice offer care to those living with a terminal illness and provide relief for caregivers in the home, as well as emotional and social support for the client and family. The focus of the volunteer is to help meet the needs of the patient and family.
