INFECTION CONTROL
Employees of DeKalb Memorial and other health-care workers have been trained in "Standard Precautions" when handling blood and body fluids of all patients, according to state and federal laws. You will see staff wearing gloves and possible gowns, masks and/or eyewear for performing certain procedures, as well as using special containers for used needles and other "sharps." In addition, special safety devices are utilized, and hand hygiene procedures are practiced to protect both patient and staff from communicable disease. These measures are intended to protect both the worker and the patient from unnecessary exposure to blood or body fluids.
Sometimes patients have a condition or disease that could possibly be contagious to staff and other patients. As a result, special rooms or use of certain equipment or attire may be necessary. Signs will be posted on the doors of these rooms; please follow the instructions on the signs.
If you have any questions about Standard Precautions or other infection control measures, please ask your nurse.
