PARENTS OF PEDIATRIC PATIENTS
DeKalb Memorial Hospital wants parents to be closely involved with their hospitalized child for comfort and support. Living-in arrangements are encouraged so that the parent can assist and help with the follow-up care. Parents are strongly advised to stay or have another responsible adult remain with the child 24 hours a day. This is essential for the child's well-being and can help alleviate fear.It is important that you explain to the young patient exactly what is happening to them. Your child trusts you, so be honest and explain to them when it is going to hurt. Let the youngster know the benefits of each medical treatment (This shot will help you feel better). If there is a question you cannot answer, please ask your doctor or nurse to explain it to you and your child so that both of you understand. Try to repeat information to the child so that they may become familiar and more comfortable with what is happening. If you should need to leave for a short time and a family member is not available, we ask that you notify the staff. They will need to know where you are going, a phone number where you can be reached, and the time you expect to return. This is to ensure that you can be contacted in case of an emergency. When your child returns home from the hospital, you may need to allow time for readjustment of the youngster. The child has recently received a lot of attention and may find it difficult to settle back into the normal home routine. Be patient.
