Hospice is a philosophy of care that emphasizes living to the fullest even while an individual is experiencing a life-threatening illness. Hospice care focuses on quality of life by providing physical, emotional and spiritual comfort to people in the last stages of life. And Hospice at DeKalb Memorial Hospital takes a holistic approach in addressing the many concerns of all involved with caring for a loved one at home.
The DeKalb Memorial Hospice team of professionals includes physicians, registered nurses, social workers and clergy as well as specialized therapists, home health aides and specially trained volunteers.
Hospice visiting nurses help families learn how to manage their loved one's pain and symptoms; the nurses are on call 24 hours a day to provide care and support to the patient and family members.
All hospice care is under professional medical supervision. The patient and family are both included in the care plan, and emotional, spiritual and practical support is given based on the patient's wishes and the family's needs. Trained volunteers can offer respite care for family members as well as meaningful support to the patient.
Benefits for Hospice care are available through Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance carriers. Trained DeKalb Memorial Hospice staff will work with insurance companies regarding coverage, specific benefits available, and billing procedures.

DeKalb Memorial Home Health Services has been awarded accreditation from the Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP). CHAP is recognized as the governing body of the community health and home care industry.
Both Home Health Services and Hospice hold the distinction of being the first programs awarded the CHAP accreditation in Northeast Indiana and one of only a few in the State.
